Why it matters
When you download a model from a public hub and run it, you're trusting a supply chain — the model's weights, the data it was trained on, the code that loads it, and the platform that hosts it — much as you trust a software dependency when you `npm install` it. And that trust can be misplaced: a model can be backdoored or poisoned, distributed in a file format that executes code when loaded, licensed in a way that forbids your use, or simply of unknown provenance. As AI gets woven into more applications, 'where did this model come from and is it safe to run?' becomes a real security question,…
What you'll learn
- seeing models + data as a supply chain
- reading a model card for provenance and license
- avoiding unsafe model serialization formats
- recognising AI-specific supply-chain risks
- applying least privilege when running a model
Steps in this lab
- A model is a supply chain
- Check provenance: who published this, and where from
- Read the model card
- Mind the license
- Beware unsafe serialization formats
- Run it with least privilege
- Why AI supply-chain hygiene is the new dependency hygiene
