Why it matters
A real moderation system is never one magic filter. It is a chain of narrow tools, each doing a small job, feeding a decision that a human can inspect and overturn. Learning to build that chain yourself is the difference between believing a single score can settle a case and understanding that a responsible system is a composition: detect personal data and redact it before it is ever stored, score the text for abuse as a separate signal, then apply a written policy that decides what to do and logs why. Building it by hand makes two things impossible to un-see. First, how easily a confident…
What you'll learn
- composing multiple checks into one pipeline
- detecting personal data (PII) with Microsoft Presidio
- redacting text before it is stored or scored
- scoring text with an offline toxicity classifier
- writing a policy layer that returns allow / flag-for-review / block
- logging automated decisions for review and appeals
- reasoning about false positives and bias in moderation
- designing for human review and transparency
Steps in this lab
- What a pipeline is, and the pieces we will chain
- Set up an offline workbench
- Stage 1 — detect and redact personal data
- Stage 2 — score the redacted text for abuse
- Stage 3 — a policy layer that decides, and a log
- Compose the three stages into one pipeline
- The limits: false positives, bias, context, and appeals
- Human review, transparency, and what you built
