Lion Cipher Lab

10-minute drill: review a Windows laptop's security settings

Why it matters

An IT security specialist is the person who looks at a machine and says, quickly and correctly, what is protecting it and what is not. Most real compromises of laptops start with a protection that was quietly switched off or an everyday account that had far more power than it needed. Reading a short settings dump and ranking the fixes is the everyday version of the job, and a common interview exercise.
