Lion Cipher Lab

Encrypt a USB drive with VeraCrypt

Why it matters

A USB stick or portable drive is the single easiest piece of your digital life to lose — it falls out of a bag, gets left in a hotel-room laptop, or is lifted from a desk, and it does it far more often than a whole laptop does. If that drive is not encrypted, whoever finds it can read every file on it by simply plugging it into any computer; there is no login screen on a USB stick. That's how tax documents, client data, medical records, and passwords end up in a stranger's hands. Encryption at rest fixes this: with a VeraCrypt volume, everything on the drive is scrambled and unreadable…

What you'll learn

Steps in this lab

  1. Why a lost USB drive is a breach — and what encryption fixes
  2. Meet VeraCrypt (free, open source) and install it
  3. Decide: an encrypted file container, or the whole USB
  4. Create the volume with the wizard
  5. Choose a strong passphrase — it is the ONLY key
  6. Mount it, use it, then dismount before you unplug
  7. Safe habits: backups, and what encryption does NOT do
  8. Why this is worth doing today
