Find cloud misconfigurations with ScoutSuite (your own account, read-only)

Why it matters
The large majority of cloud data breaches are not clever break-ins -- they are misconfigurations: a storage bucket accidentally left open to the whole internet, an access key with far more permission than it needs, an account with no multi-factor authentication guarding the login. The cloud gives you enormous power with a single click or a single line of code, and that same ease makes it just as easy to expose something without realizing it. The defensive skill that answers this is called posture auditing: pointing a tool at an account and asking, plainly, what is misconfigured right now?…
What you'll learn
- what a cloud misconfiguration is and why it, not zero-days, causes most cloud breaches
- creating a free-tier cloud account and immediately protecting the root user with MFA
- the least-privilege habit: minting a READ-ONLY audit credential (SecurityAudit / ReadOnlyAccess), never a long-lived admin key
- installing Python 3 and pip, then installing ScoutSuite into an isolated virtual environment
- running a ScoutSuite scan against your own account and opening the HTML report offline
- reading the report to spot the classic findings: public storage, over-permissive IAM, accounts without MFA
- closing the loop safely: deleting the access key the moment the audit is done, and never scanning an account you do not own
Steps in this lab
- Read this first: your own account, read-only, revoke when done
- What a 'misconfiguration' is, and what ScoutSuite does about it
- Create a free-tier cloud account -- and secure the root user immediately
- Mint a READ-ONLY audit credential (least privilege in action)
- Install Python 3 and pip
- Install ScoutSuite into its own virtual environment
- Give ScoutSuite your read-only key (as environment variables)
- Run the scan
- Open the report and find the three classic misconfigurations
- Clean up: DELETE the access key you created
- Why this one habit makes you a cloud defender
