Lion Cipher Lab

Govern many AWS accounts as one: Organizations, OUs, and a landing-zone baseline

Why it matters

The number one architecture mistake in AWS is the single-account antipattern: dev, prod, security tooling, and billing all crammed into one account. When that account is compromised, misconfigured, or hit with a runaway bill, there is no wall to stop the damage — everything is in blast range. Real organizations run tens to hundreds of accounts precisely so that a mistake in a sandbox cannot touch production, a breach in a workload cannot reach the security tooling, and each team's spend is its own line item. AWS Organizations is the free service that lets you govern all of them as one: group…

What you'll learn

Steps in this lab

  1. COST SAFETY FIRST — budget alert, and what stays free
  2. Why many accounts — the single-account antipattern
  3. Why accounts beat VPCs as the isolation boundary
  4. Enable AWS Organizations (free, this is the mandatory start)
  5. Find the root — the top of your account tree
  6. Design a sane OU structure — the recommended layout
  7. Create the OUs (mandatory hands-on, still free)
  8. List the structure and confirm the tree
  9. The landing zone — and Control Tower vs build-it-yourself
  10. Centralized logging — enable an organization CloudTrail trail
  11. Delegated administration — don't run everything from the payer
  12. OPTIONAL EXTENSION — create a member account (real, hard to undo)
  13. Do it better, and take the model with you
