Why it matters
Security is not only about keeping secrets and blocking attackers — it is also about the service actually being there. That is the A in the CIA triad (Confidentiality, Integrity, Availability): a system that is down, or serving errors, or whose certificate has expired, has failed a security property just as surely as one that leaked data. Monitoring is how you find out about that failure before your users do — and before a slow-burning problem (a disk filling, a certificate quietly expiring, ransomware pulling services offline) turns into a visible outage. The professional habit is simple:…
What you'll learn
- running Uptime Kuma with Docker
- understanding availability as a security property (the A in the CIA triad)
- adding HTTP, ping, TCP port and TLS certificate-expiry monitors
- monitoring TLS certificate expiry before it causes an outage
- setting up an outage notification
- reading uptime status and history
- tuning monitors to avoid false alarms
Steps in this lab
- Availability is a security property, not an ops afterthought
- What you need, and the one rule
- Run Uptime Kuma with one Docker command
- First launch: create your admin account
- Add your first monitor: an HTTP(s) check on your own site
- Add ping, TCP port, and TLS certificate-expiry monitors
- Set up a notification so it reaches you
- Read the status and history — and avoid false alarms
