Why it matters
Public Wi-Fi advice has been stuck in two unhelpful extremes for years: either 'never use it, hackers will steal everything' or 'just turn on a VPN and you're invincible.' Both are wrong, and both leave people worse off — the first scares them away from a genuinely convenient tool, and the second gives false confidence about threats a VPN does nothing to stop. The truth sits in the middle and is easy to act on once you know it: the classic eavesdropping threat has shrunk dramatically thanks to HTTPS, while a smaller set of real risks — fake hotspots, fake sign-in pages, and someone reading…
What you'll learn
- telling the real public-Wi-Fi risks from the overstated ones
- understanding how HTTPS changed the threat
- spotting evil-twin and rogue hotspots
- recognizing fake captive portals
- using your phone's hotspot and cellular for sensitive tasks
- responding correctly to certificate warnings
- hardening a device before joining a public network (firewall on, sharing off, updates)
- knowing when a VPN actually helps on public Wi-Fi
Steps in this lab
- The vocabulary, so nothing here is mysterious
- The old fear, and why it mostly went away
- Real risk 1: the evil twin (a fake network)
- Real risk 2: the fake captive portal
- Real risk 3: the person behind you
- Habit 1: for anything sensitive, skip the public network
- Habit 2: harden the device, and never click through warnings
- The calm version to carry with you
