Lion Cipher Lab

Secure your own home Wi-Fi and router

Why it matters

Your router is the front door to everything you do online — every phone, laptop, TV, and smart gadget in your home passes through it. Most routers ship with weak defaults: a well-known admin password, an old encryption setting, features you don't use switched on. Fixing a handful of those settings, one time, is genuinely the highest-impact security thing most people can do, and it protects everyone who shares the network. This lab is that fix, from zero, on the router you already have.

What you'll learn

Steps in this lab

  1. Why the router is the most important box in your house
  2. Log into your own router's admin page
  3. Change the default admin password
  4. Turn on the strongest encryption: WPA3 (or WPA2-AES)
  5. Rename your network (SSID) away from the default
  6. Update your router's firmware
  7. Turn off WPS and remote management
  8. Set up a guest network — and put your smart-home gadgets on it
  9. What you just did — and why it punches above its weight
