Set up a pre-commit security hook

Why it matters

The cheapest moment to stop a secret or an obvious mistake is before it becomes part of git history. Once a credential lands in a commit and gets pushed, it is exposed and has to be rotated -- a real, expensive cleanup -- because git history remembers even after you delete the line. A pre-commit hook moves the check earlier: it runs automatically at the instant you commit and refuses to let a leak through, so the mistake never happens instead of being fixed afterward. The pre-commit framework makes this a five-minute, free setup that guards every commit you make from then on. It is one of the…

What you'll learn

Steps in this lab

  1. What a git hook is, and why it beats scanning later
  2. Open a terminal and move into a repo you own
  3. Install the pre-commit tool
  4. Write a .pre-commit-config.yaml with real checks
  5. Install the hook into git
  6. Try to commit a fake secret and watch it get blocked
  7. The reality: a safety net, not a guarantee
  8. The habit you just started
