Lion Cipher Lab

Connect your own devices privately with Tailscale

Why it matters

Reaching your own machine from somewhere else is one of the most common real-world needs in tech, and the usual answer — forwarding a port on your home router so the internet can dial in — quietly exposes that machine to the entire internet and every bot scanning it. A mesh VPN solves the same problem the safe way: your devices talk to each other through encrypted, direct tunnels and nothing is opened to the public. Tailscale is the fastest way to feel how that works, and because it is built on WireGuard the ideas transfer straight to the hand-rolled tunnels you will meet on the job: private…

What you'll learn

Steps in this lab

  1. What a mesh VPN is — and why it beats port-forwarding
  2. Create your free account and your tailnet
  3. Install Tailscale on your first device and sign in
  4. Install Tailscale on your second device and sign in with the SAME account
  5. See the private 100.x addresses
  6. Connect from one device to the other over its private address
  7. The concepts underneath: WireGuard, ACLs, and the trust model
  8. What you built, and the trade-off worth keeping
