Lion Cipher Lab

Summarize security logs with a local LLM

Why it matters

Reading logs is one of the most common and most tedious jobs in defensive security, and it's exactly the kind of text-heavy chore a language model can genuinely help with — turning hundreds of dense lines into a plain-English summary and a short shortlist of things to look at. But logs are also some of the most sensitive text a defender ever touches, and they routinely contain input written by whoever is attacking the system. That makes this the perfect place to learn the responsible version of the skill: use a model running on your own machine so the data never leaves the box, treat its…

What you'll learn

Steps in this lab

  1. The job, and why we do it on your own machine
  2. Install Ollama and pull a small model
  3. Prepare a small log excerpt — and scrub it first
  4. Write a careful prompt and feed it the excerpt
  5. Read the output as a first draft, not an answer
  6. Limit one: it can hallucinate, and it can miss things
  7. Limit two: the log may be attacking the model (prompt injection)
  8. The workflow to keep: assistant, not authority
