Why it matters
The report is the product. A client, a manager, or a system owner never watches you work — they read what you hand them, and they make decisions and spend money based on it. A brilliant exploit described in a way nobody can reproduce, prioritise, or fix is worth nothing; a plainly written, well-scored, remediable finding gets patched. This lab takes the raw output you already know how to generate and teaches the part most tutorials skip: turning it into a document a non-technical reader can act on and a developer can close a ticket from. It also teaches the judgment that separates a…
What you'll learn
- structuring a penetration-test report
- writing an executive summary for non-technical readers
- scoring a finding with the CVSS v4.0 calculator and reading its vector string
- separating technical severity from business risk
- writing reproducible findings with evidence and actionable remediation
- mapping findings to MITRE ATT&CK for the defenders
Steps in this lab
- What a pentest report is — and why it is the actual deliverable
- First, put the authorization and scope on the page
- Create the report skeleton
- Write the methodology so the work reads as systematic, not lucky
- Pick the finding you will score first
- Score it on the official CVSS v4.0 calculator
- Understand each metric you chose — the vector is the argument, the score is the conclusion
- Score a second, lower finding — so the report is not all sirens
- CVSS is technical severity — not the client's risk. Write both.
- Write the full finding — description, evidence, impact, reproduction, remediation
- Make remediation specific enough to close the ticket
- Map findings to MITRE ATT&CK for the defenders
- Handle evidence and appendices without leaking what you found
- Write the executive summary last — for the person who reads only it
- Do a review pass against the bar a client would hold you to
- What you built — and where it goes next
